Chapter 57
Overview
Cooper follows Debbie’s Findly location history to Ken Bryant’s house and finds the home empty, dark, and seemingly undisturbed. His fear eases until Ken’s abandoned cell phone rings, revealing multiple missed calls and messages that make Ken’s fishing-trip story suspect.
The discovery deepens Cooper’s suspicion that Debbie may have harmed or hidden something involving his boss, pushing Cooper from passive worry into active investigation inside Ken’s home.
Summary
Cooper discovers through Findly that Debbie stopped at Ken Bryant’s house the previous day. Because Ken is Cooper’s soon-to-be former boss and is supposedly away on a fishing trip, Cooper struggles to imagine an innocent explanation, though he briefly hopes Debbie may have gone there to plead for Cooper’s job.
Worried by Debbie’s recent behavior and by Lexi’s warning that the app only logs places where Debbie stayed more than ten minutes, Cooper drives to Ken’s house in Hingham. The house is dark and quiet, with no car visible, which initially supports the idea that Ken is away.
Cooper rings the bell and gets no answer. Remembering that Ken hides a spare key outside, Cooper finds it under a potted plant and enters, fully aware that he is effectively breaking into his boss’s home. Inside, the living room appears undisturbed, and Cooper begins to calm himself by concluding that Debbie has not hurt anyone there.
Just as Cooper is about to leave, a cell phone rings from the sofa. Cooper finds Ken’s phone wedged near a cushion, showing a call from Mrs. McCauley and multiple missed messages and voicemails from the past two days. Because Ken is rarely without his phone, Cooper realizes the abandoned device makes Ken’s supposed fishing trip look suspicious.
Cooper’s concern returns, and his attention shifts to the staircase. Instead of leaving, Cooper places the phone on the coffee table and decides to search the second floor for signs of what happened to Ken.
