Chapter 25
Overview
Debbie escalates from petty revenge and poisoning into deliberate nighttime crimes. After drugging Cooper so Debbie can move freely, Debbie sabotages Jo Dolan’s rose garden and then drives to Coach Pike’s house with plans to enter secretly.
The chapter reveals the extent of Debbie’s botanical knowledge, hidden drug supply, surveillance habits, and willingness to use all of them against people Debbie believes have wronged Debbie or Debbie’s children.
Summary
Debbie wakes at two in the morning beside a sleeping Cooper. Cooper does not stir because Debbie drugged his diet soda with opium harvested from the poppies in Debbie’s garden, which Debbie disguises as windflowers. Debbie reflects that Debbie also grows other dangerous plants, including ipecacuanha berries, and that boredom and an underused intellect have pushed Debbie into these experiments.
Debbie dresses in dark clothes, retrieves Japanese beetle trap refill packs and a shovel, and leaves the house. Debbie walks to Jo Dolan’s property, passing Rochelle’s dark house and noting that Rochelle is likely still sick from the earlier poisoning.
At Jo’s rose garden, Debbie checks for cameras and finds none. Debbie digs three shallow holes around the edge of Jo’s garden and buries the beetle trap refills, intending to sabotage Jo’s roses by attracting destructive insects.
After returning home and putting away the shovel, Debbie drives to Coach Robert Pike’s house in Weymouth. Debbie had already inspected the property earlier and believes Pike has no cameras, no guard dog, no family, and no one else in the house.
Debbie approaches Pike’s lawn and locates a fake sprinkler head that Debbie noticed before. Inside are a hidden house key and cash. Debbie takes the key, leaves the money, and prepares to enter Pike’s house, confident that Pike will sleep through the night if Pike ate one of Debbie’s brownies.
