Chapter 10
Overview
Debbie heads to Titan Fitness after her disrupted morning and finds comfort in routine, exercise, and a brief encouraging exchange with Cindy. The chapter introduces Harley Sibbern as Debbie’s newer, more personal friend, someone outside Debbie’s neighborhood and family circles.
Harley’s upcoming attendance at the book club gives Debbie much-needed social backup, while Harley’s avocado allergy is established as a practical detail for the gathering. Debbie’s reflections on aging, motherhood, insecurity, and friendship deepen her character before the next social confrontation.
Summary
With the garden photo shoot canceled, Debbie uses the unexpected free time to go to Titan Fitness, a nearby gym she has been attending three times a week. Debbie reflects that regular workouts have improved her endurance and strength, giving her a sense of progress after initially struggling to run for even five minutes.
At the front desk, Cindy notices Debbie is arriving later than usual. Debbie avoids explaining the upsetting events of the morning and instead says she is squeezing in a workout before lunch. Cindy’s encouragement briefly lifts Debbie’s mood.
In the equipment area, Harley Sibbern, a Titan trainer and fitness instructor, greets Debbie and notes that Debbie is not usually at the gym on Wednesdays. Debbie explains that she is working out before the neighborhood book club and confirms that Harley still plans to come.
Debbie thinks about how unusual and refreshing her friendship with Harley feels. Unlike Debbie’s school-parent and neighborhood acquaintances, Harley is a friend who exists outside Debbie’s family life, has no children, and shares conversations that do not revolve around parenting. Debbie admires Harley’s confidence, style, and coolness while feeling self-conscious about her own age and body.
Harley worries about whether she should bring food to the potluck book club, but Debbie reassures her that Rochelle always provides plenty. Debbie also confirms Harley’s avocado allergy, making a note to avoid serving any. After agreeing to meet at Debbie’s house at 12:30, Harley leaves, and Debbie gets on the elliptical, hoping the workout will help her forget her problems for a while.
