Chapter 8 The Scandalous Scene

Miusov, chastened by his earlier outburst, resolves to be courteous and even drop his lawsuit as he and Ivan arrive for the Father Superior’s dinner. The simple, well-laid table underscores the monastery’s hospitality. Guests gather and grace is said, with Maximov hovering at the margins.

At that moment Fyodor Pavlovitch bursts back in, determined to disgrace himself and others. He mocks the company, needles Miusov, and launches into slanders about elders, confession, and monastic luxury, appealing to old rumors he scarcely understands. The Father Superior replies with scriptural humility, while Miusov, inflamed, and then Kalganov leave in protest.

Fyodor escalates, striking the table and accusing the monastery of exploiting peasants and having wronged him in the past. The Superior continues to bear the insults patiently. Fyodor declares he will remove Alyosha from the monastery and invites Maximov to carouse in town.

Outside, Fyodor orders Alyosha to come home “for good.” Ivan, grim and silent, joins his father’s carriage. Maximov tries to force his way in, but Ivan shoves him back and the coach drives off.

On the road, Fyodor alternates needling and forced joviality—asking for brandy and taunting Ivan as “Karl von Moor.” Ivan refuses engagement, staring at the road, and they ride home in tense silence, with Fyodor repeating his intention to take Alyosha away.
