Chapter 5 A Laceration in the Drawing-Room

Alyosha and Madame Hohlakov arrive as Ivan rises to leave. Alyosha’s worries about a love triangle sharpen when Katerina Ivanovna, agitated but resolute, declares she will never abandon Dmitri, even if he marries Grushenka. She will become a lifelong, self-sacrificing "sister," a decision Ivan pointedly approves, calling it a sustaining duty.

Ivan announces he must return to Moscow. Katerina abruptly turns practical, delighted he can explain her situation to her relatives, which strikes Alyosha as theatrical. Pressed for his judgment, Alyosha blurts that Katerina may not love Dmitri and is torturing Ivan because she actually loves Ivan while clinging to an imagined duty to Dmitri.

Katerina snaps at Alyosha, but Ivan responds with raw honesty: Katerina has never cared for him, used him to avenge Dmitri’s insults, and truly loves Dmitri precisely for those humiliations—her "laceration." He refuses reconciliation, quotes Schiller, and leaves, declaring he will not return.

As Alyosha blames himself, Madame Hohlakov exults in his candor and vows to stop Ivan’s departure. Katerina reappears composed, gives Alyosha two hundred roubles, and asks him to deliver it delicately to Captain Snegiryov, the impoverished officer Dmitri had dragged by the beard, as sympathetic aid from her, not from Dmitri.

Madame Hohlakov reveals the family’s wish for Katerina to marry Ivan, then hurries off when Katerina is seized by hysterics. Lise calls from behind the door while Alyosha, burdened with remorse and the commission, rushes away to carry it out.
