The Idiot — Part III — Chapter VIII

Myshkin wakes on the park bench to find Aglaya, who presses him to recount Hippolyte’s failed suicide and Evgenie’s comments. She insists on seeing Hippolyte’s confession and, agitated yet determined, asks Myshkin to be her friend and help her run away to build an independent, useful life.

Aglaya swings between bravado and shyness, testing Myshkin with obvious falsehoods about loving Gania and his supposed candle ordeal, then admits she lied. She challenges Myshkin’s judgments and declares he lacks gentleness. Their talk turns to Nastasia Filippovna; Aglaya accuses Myshkin of coming back for Nastasia and probes his feelings.

Myshkin confesses he returned because of Nastasia but insists he does not love her, only pities her, and recounts her self-condemnation and refusal of his help. Aglaya, revealing deep jealousy, produces three letters from Nastasia urging Aglaya to marry Myshkin for his happiness. Outraged and hurt, Aglaya orders Myshkin to return the letters and threatens to have Nastasia confined if she writes again.

As emotions peak, Lizabetha Prokofievna arrives and overhears. Cornered, Aglaya explosively claims she loves Gania and will elope with him the next day, then rushes off. Lizabetha detains Myshkin, demanding he come home with her to explain the tumult.
