Chapter 4 The Confession of a Passionate Heart — In Anecdote

Dmitri begins by admitting a “wild” life of vice, cruelty, and casual affairs, insisting he never bragged or seduced for money alone. Alyosha, moved, admits he shares the same human ladder of temptation, though on a lower rung, which softens Dmitri and reins in his cynicism.

Turning to his “tragedy,” Dmitri recalls his time as a lieutenant in a provincial town. The respected but embattled lieutenant-colonel (Katerina Ivanovna’s father) falls under suspicion for a 4500-rouble deficit, long covered by risky loans to the merchant Trifonov. When repayment fails and dismissal looms, the town’s favor cools, and despair overtakes the colonel.

Dmitri, having just received money from his father, secretly proposes through Agafya Ivanovna that he will provide 4000 roubles if Katerina comes to him herself. After the colonel nearly attempts suicide when ordered to hand over the funds, Katerina arrives alone at Dmitri’s lodging, determined yet trembling, and asks for the money.

Consumed by a sudden, hateful urge to degrade her and retract the offer, Dmitri imagines revenge but recognizes Katerina’s moral strength and the certainty she would reject him afterward. At the brink, he overcomes the impulse, takes out a 5000-rouble note, respectfully presents it, and bows. Katerina pales, then bows to the floor and flees.

In the aftermath, Dmitri nearly stabs himself in ecstatic turmoil but does not. He acknowledges his self-aggrandizing tendencies even in confession, yet holds to the essential truth: he saved Katerina without violating her, revealing his conflict between base desire and an often-overlooked honor. He notes that Ivan already knows this story; now Alyosha does too.
