Chapter 3 The Confession of a Passionate Heart — in Verse

Alyosha, unfazed by Fyodor’s blustering command to return home, sets out to visit Katerina Ivanovna, whose urgent note fills him with vague dread. To save time, he cuts through backyards and is unexpectedly beckoned over a fence by Dmitri, who hides in a neighboring garden.

Dmitri pulls Alyosha into a decaying summer-house where a half-emptied brandy bottle shows he has been “indulging.” Ecstatic and volatile, Dmitri declares that only Alyosha can hear and forgive his confession. He hints that tomorrow will bring an ending and a beginning, and that he needs Alyosha to act for him with their father and with Katerina.

Reading Katerina’s note, Dmitri rejoices at the coincidence: Alyosha was already on his way to her. He insists on telling everything and frames his mood with scraps of poetry and hymns, weeping over human degradation while professing boundless love for Alyosha and a contradictory, ruinous infatuation with another woman.

Dmitri launches into a passionate meditation: man’s vileness and yearning for joy coexist; beauty is terrible and mysterious; the ideals of the Madonna and Sodom struggle within the same heart. He brands himself a Karamazov “insect” driven by sensual storm yet still capable of praising God, where God and the devil battle in the human heart.
