Summary
A week after the park rendezvous, Varvara Ardalionovna (Varia) returns home dejected from the Epanchins. A narrative digression outlines the “commonplace” type, then applies it to Varia, her husband Ptitsin, and her brother Gania, sketching their ambitions, limits, and recent histories.
Varia informs Gania that the Epanchin elders have all but confirmed Aglaya’s formal engagement to Prince Myshkin, with Princess Bielokonski due that evening and a public announcement expected. Gania affects resignation but betrays agitation. They discuss the parents’ mixed reactions and Aglaya’s shy yet serious stance, while hinting Myshkin’s ecstatic behavior.
The siblings then confront a growing scandal: General Ivolgin reportedly begged Lizabetha Prokofievna for work, complained about his family, and may be tied to four hundred roubles gone to a Petersburg widow. Gania blames Hippolyte for sniffing out and spreading the story, fears Aglaya’s knowledge, and worries for their mother. Varia counters that Aglaya values defiance and might be unmoved by disgrace.
As the quarrel intensifies, Ptitsin enters and a commotion from upstairs erupts. The crisis breaks when General Ivolgin bursts in, enraged and trembling, followed by Nina Alexandrovna, Colia, and Hippolyte, bringing the family conflict into the open.
