Crime and Punishment — Part I

On a stifling July evening in Petersburg, Rodion Raskolnikov slips past his landlady to avoid debts and conversation. Tormented by poverty and isolation, he debates a daring “exploit” he both mocks and fears. Distracted by trivial risks like his conspicuous hat, he presses on toward a specific tenement.

Raskolnikov ascends a dark back staircase to Alyona Ivanovna, a harsh, mistrustful pawnbroker. He presents a watch and, while bargaining, covertly surveys the flat and notes her key ring and the likely location of a strong-box. He asks if her sister lives with her, probing whether Alyona is often alone.

Revulsion at his own intent surges as Raskolnikov leaves; he denounces the “filthy” thoughts driving him. Weak from hunger and shaken, he descends into a tavern for beer, which briefly clears his mind and restores a fragile sense of control.

In the quieter room, Raskolnikov observes a few patrons: a drunken, singing man, an irritated artisan companion, and a solitary, agitated clerk. His temporarily brightened mood hints at its instability as his underlying conflict persists.
