Overview

Summary
Waiting outside while the famous doctor examines Ilyusha, Kolya probes Alyosha about God, calling Him a hypothesis and declaring himself a socialist. He cites Voltaire and Byelinsky, then grows self-conscious, fearing he seems to be showing off.
Alyosha answers calmly, questioning Kolya’s borrowed ideas and noting the Russian schoolboy’s pride without knowledge. Kolya concedes the point yet praises Russian independence of spirit, then digresses about politics and exile, revealing boastfulness mixed with anxiety about appearing ridiculous.
They speak of Nina, whose gentle reproach stirs Kolya’s remorse for delaying his visit. Alyosha urges Kolya to know such suffering people to correct his crude conceit. Kolya confesses wilfulness and vanity; Alyosha calls his nature charming but distorted, explaining that fear of ridicule plagues their whole generation.
Alyosha counsels Kolya to resist conformity and practice self-criticism, even if alone. The candor forges intimacy: Kolya admits he longed to be friends; Alyosha predicts hardship but a life he will bless. Their mutual esteem solidifies just as the doctor appears, leaving the verdict still unspoken.
