Chapter 7 And in the Open Air

Alyosha and Captain Snegiryov leave the cramped apartment to talk. The captain recounts Dmitri Karamazov dragging him by the beard before the schoolboys, and Ilyusha’s desperate plea for forgiveness. Alyosha vows Dmitri will publicly apologize, but the captain explains a duel or lawsuit would ruin his dependent family.

The captain details Ilyusha’s angry clashes at school, his wound from stones, and his proud resolve to defend his father. He describes the boy’s fever, secret tears, and fantasies of honorable vengeance. Father and son dream of escaping the town with a cart and horse, seeking a fresh start.

Alyosha advises keeping Ilyusha from school and then presents Katerina Ivanovna’s private gift of two hundred roubles, sent in sisterly solidarity after her own insult by Dmitri. Overwhelmed, the captain imagines medicines for Nina, help for their mother, easing Varvara’s burden, proper food, and even moving to a clerk’s post in another province.

At the height of his hope, the captain is seized by a crisis of pride and fear of dishonor before Ilyusha. In a frenzy, he crushes and tramples the banknotes, declaring he will not sell his honor, then runs off in tears, asking what he could tell his son if he accepted money for their shame. Alyosha, grieved, smooths and pockets the notes and goes to inform Katerina Ivanovna.
