Stunned silence greets Nastasia Philipovna’s unexpected arrival. She breezily demands introductions, teases Gania about lodgers, and immediately unsettles the family. When Prince Myshkin urges Gania to calm himself, Gania briefly turns his anger on the prince before masking it with laughter and presenting Myshkin to Nastasia, who mistakes him for a servant and probes him with pointed questions.

Prince Myshkin explains that he recognized Nastasia from her portrait and prior talk of her, admitting he felt as if he had seen her eyes before. His candid, halting sincerity intrigues Nastasia while Ferdishenko eggs things on. The mood shifts when General Ivolgin, dressed for show, arrives; Gania’s worst fear—his father meeting Nastasia—materializes, threatening his ambitions and pride.

Nastasia engages the general, ignoring Nina Alexandrovna’s attempts to remove him. The general, flattered, boasts loudly about past connections and recounts an anecdote of throwing a lady’s poodle from a train after she tossed his cigar. The story delights the room until Nastasia notes she has just read the identical incident reported from abroad, exposing the tale as borrowed.

The revelation humiliates the general and, by extension, Gania’s family. Laughter spreads, while Gania stands stricken. He tries to extract his father from the room, rage barely controlled. At that instant, a thunderous knock on the front door interrupts, signaling the arrival of another, potentially explosive, visitor.
