Crime and Punishment — Part VI — Chapter VIII

Raskolnikov arrives at Sonia’s room at dusk, where Sonia and Dounia have anxiously awaited him. He asks for a cross and speaks erratically about surrendering, masking his terror and pride. Sonia places a wooden cross on him and prepares to accompany him, but Raskolnikov brusquely rejects her and leaves, revealing his agitation and self-loathing.

Alone in the streets, Raskolnikov wrestles with second thoughts and his craving for a final bond; he realizes he sought Sonia’s tears more than her counsel. Drawn to the crowded Hay Market, he recalls Sonia’s command to bow and confess publicly. Overcome, he kneels, kisses the earth twice, and nearly declares himself a murderer, but the crowd’s mockery silences him. He glimpses Sonia hiding nearby, understanding she will follow him wherever he goes.

Raskolnikov proceeds to the police office intending to face the “explosive lieutenant,” Ilya Petrovitch. Ilya, in good humor, rambles about literature and society. In passing, a clerk announces Svidrigaïlov’s suicide, which shocks Raskolnikov and intensifies his dizziness and despair. He retreats, meets Sonia outside, then turns back inside, compelled to end the ordeal.

Returning to Ilya Petrovitch, Raskolnikov, pale and trembling, rejects water and finally speaks plainly: he killed the pawnbroker Alyona and her sister Lizaveta with an axe and robbed them. As people gather, he repeats his confession, transforming wavering intent into irrevocable admission and submitting himself to judgment.
