Chapter 11 Another Reputation Ruined

At the dark crossroads, Dmitri Karamazov leaps from under a willow and jokingly threatens Alyosha, then confesses he had just considered hanging himself before the joy of seeing Alyosha stayed him. Alyosha recounts the confrontation he witnessed between Katerina Ivanovna and Grushenka, including insults and Katerina’s humiliation.

Dmitri listens grimly, then bursts into wild laughter, condemning both women by turns and reveling in Katerina’s pride brought low. Remembering he once exposed Katerina’s “fatal day” to Grushenka, Dmitri calls himself a scoundrel and moves to leave, then returns to make a darker confession.

Dmitri strikes his chest and declares he bears a present dishonor he could still avert, yet he will not; he will carry out a base plan in a “filthy back-alley” with the “she-devil,” and forbids Alyosha’s prayers. He abruptly departs toward town, leaving Alyosha shaken.

Alyosha hurries to the hermitage, where Father Paissy reports Elder Zossima has grown weaker, briefly blessed the brethren, and affirmed that Alyosha’s work lies for a time in the world. Moved by love and remorse, Alyosha resolves to stay with the dying elder despite prior promises elsewhere.

Praying for peace rather than relief, Alyosha finds and reads Lise Hohlakov’s secret letter confessing her love and proposing a future union if he leaves the monastery. He softly laughs at the innocence of it, then repents the laughter, prays for all, and falls into a calm sleep.
