Chapter 3 An Onion
Overview
Alyosha visits Grushenka with Rakitin and finds compassion instead of the corruption he expected. Grushenka confesses her past, tells the “onion” parable, and vacillates between vengeance and forgiveness toward her former seducer. When a summons arrives from Mokroe, she rushes to meet him, sending Dmitri a wrenching farewell, while Rakitin—exposed as having taken money to bring Alyosha—storms off.
Summary
Rakitin brings Alyosha to Grushenka’s modest lodge, where Grushenka anxiously awaits news from her former lover. Startled but pleased by Alyosha’s visit, she toys with Rakitin and admits fearing Dmitri’s jealousy. Alyosha, grieving Zossima’s death, is surprised by Grushenka’s warmth and the absence of the corruption he’d dreaded.
As they talk, Grushenka reveals she deceived Dmitri about her whereabouts and is bracing for a message from her past seducer at Mokroe. She wavers between pride and vulnerability, confessing she had schemed to ensnare Alyosha, yet now sees him as a consoling, moral presence. Rakitin drinks champagne and needles them; Grushenka pays him the twenty-five roubles she promised for bringing Alyosha.
Grushenka recounts the “onion” tale to explain her lone good deed and self-contempt. Alyosha, moved, defends her compassion and urges mercy, reading in her turmoil a capacity for forgiveness. Grushenka begs Alyosha to decide whether she loves and should forgive the seducer; she both pledges forgiveness and threatens revenge, revealing the depth of her conflict.
A messenger arrives from Mokroe. Electrified, Grushenka chooses to go at once, declaring her fate sealed. From her window she sends Alyosha to tell Dmitri that she has fallen to a scoundrel, yet once loved Dmitri for a single hour. Rakitin, frustrated that events defy his cynical hopes, breaks with Alyosha and stalks off. Alyosha departs alone toward the monastery, deep in thought.
