The Brothers Karamazov — Epilogue
Overview
Five days after the verdict, Alyosha finds Ivan feverish at Katerina Ivanovna’s home and learns of Ivan’s detailed plan for Mitya’s escape during the Siberian transport. Katya confesses past quarrels, jealousy, and guilt, yet preserves Ivan’s plan and funds. Urged by Alyosha, she reluctantly agrees to visit Mitya without warning.
Summary
Five days after the trial, Alyosha visits Katerina Ivanovna. Ivan Karamazov lies in her house, delirious with fever; Katerina Ivanovna tends him despite gossip. Varvinsky and Herzenstube attend, with no clear prognosis. Alyosha comes urgently, anticipating difficulty in broaching his errand.
Katerina Ivanovna reveals Ivan had long prepared a plan for Dmitri’s escape during the third etape to Siberia, having even contacted officials. She recounts bitter quarrels with Ivan over the plan, her anger at the thought of Grushenka accompanying Dmitri, and Ivan’s jealousy. Before the trial Ivan left her a sealed letter detailing the escape and nearly ten thousand roubles for it.
Katya castigates her own temper, admits she provoked Ivan, and recognizes that her courtroom testimony helped doom Dmitri. She oscillates between reverence for Ivan’s self-sacrifice and fury, blaming herself for his breakdown. She insists Dmitri will consent to escape and presses Alyosha not to oppose it on moral grounds.
Alyosha conveys Dmitri’s request: not for reconciliation, but for Katya simply to appear at his door so he can face what he has done to her. He argues that Dmitri, though condemned, is innocent of blood and faces lifelong suffering. After resisting in shame and fear, Katya breaks down in tears, then consents to go—on the condition Alyosha not warn Dmitri beforehand—intending to come at once to avoid being seen.
