Chapter 3 The Brothers Make Friends

Alyosha finds Ivan secluded behind a screen in a bustling tavern. Ivan, surprisingly glad to see Alyosha, orders him soup and jam, reminiscing about their childhood distance and confessing he sought this meeting before leaving town. He rejoices in a visceral love of life despite disillusionment and dreams of traveling to Europe.

Discussing family tensions, Alyosha recounts his encounter with Smerdyakov. Ivan, after hearing this, decides there is no need to meet Dmitri as planned. He also speaks bitterly of their father and hints he may leave as early as the next day.

Ivan then reveals he has just ended his entanglement with Katerina Ivanovna. He proclaims unexpected lightness and freedom, acknowledging her attraction yet insisting it was not true love for him, and that her attachment to Dmitri is self-laceration. Learning she is now hysterical, he refuses to go to her.

The brothers shift to the “eternal questions.” Ivan says Russian youths obsess over God and immortality. He startles Alyosha by saying he can accept God and the idea of eternal harmony, while admitting the human mind is limited and Euclidean, unfit to grasp divine realities.

Finally, Ivan makes his confession: though he accepts God and believes suffering may be reconciled in a final harmony, he refuses to accept the world as it is. Even if ultimate justification appears, he will not accept it. He seeks honesty over cleverness and hints he hopes, perhaps, to be healed by Alyosha.
