Crime and Punishment — Part IV — Chapter II

Raskolnikov and Razumihin hurry to meet Dounia and Pulcheria Alexandrovna before Luzhin arrives. On the way, Raskolnikov admits Svidrigaïlov has just visited him and expresses fear for Dounia. They enter together with Luzhin, and an uneasy tea begins.

Luzhin reports Svidrigaïlov has come to Petersburg and maligns his past, including rumors of brutality and a hushed scandal. Raskolnikov then reveals Svidrigaïlov visited him, intends to see Dounia with a proposal, and that Marfa Petrovna left Dounia three thousand roubles. The news unsettles the room and pricks Luzhin’s pride.

Pressed by Dounia to reconcile, Luzhin complains of Raskolnikov’s insults and demands an explanation of Pulcheria Alexandrovna’s letter. The dispute shifts to Luzhin’s slander of Sonia and his misrepresentation of Raskolnikov’s charity. Raskolnikov defends Sonia sharply, further provoking Luzhin.

Dounia declares the family must choose between Luzhin and Raskolnikov and demands a resolution. Luzhin grows accusatory, implying they counted on his support and hinting at Svidrigaïlov’s “secret proposals.” Dounia, offended by his arrogance and innuendo, dismisses him.

Luzhin threatens never to return; Dounia confirms the break. When he cites “expenses” and her stained reputation, the family rebukes him. Razumihin nearly strikes Luzhin, but Raskolnikov ejects him calmly. Luzhin leaves humiliated, nursing hatred for Raskolnikov and faint hopes of repairing matters with the ladies.
