Alyosha enters Father Zossima’s cell expecting a dying man but finds Zossima sitting up, cheerful, and surrounded by devoted monks—Fathers Paissy, Iosif, Mihail, and Anfim—while the novice Porfiry attends. Lamps and candles glow as evening falls.

Zossima welcomes Alyosha warmly and immediately asks about Dmitri Karamazov. He urges Alyosha to find Dmitri at once, warning of “something terrible” in store and explaining he bowed to Dmitri’s coming suffering. Zossima recalls having seen such a fateful look before and entrusts Alyosha to act quickly, though he submits all to God’s will.

Turning to Alyosha’s future, Zossima blesses him, predicting enemies, misfortunes, and a monk-like life in the world, yet a vocation to bless life and make others bless it. He then reveals why Alyosha is especially dear to him: Alyosha’s face and spirit recall Zossima’s own elder brother, who died at seventeen and became a guiding sign that led Zossima to monastic life.

Zossima also addresses Porfiry’s quiet mortification at Alyosha being preferred, assuring Porfiry of his love. He briefly mentions the humble alms of a woman from Vishegorye, ensuring her offering reached a destitute widow, underscoring his care for the poor.
