CHAPTER NINETY-ONE Worthy of Pursuit

Overview

Kvothe settles into fall term: Fela mentors him in the Archives, and Elodin’s lessons on naming remain opaque. Kvothe repeatedly meets Denna at the Eolian, choosing friendship over pursuit and describing her as cruel by nature, a wild hind. He foreshadows that Ambrose’s delayed revenge will eventually force him from the University.

Summary

As fall term settles, Fela gradually tutors Kvothe in the inner workings of the Archives, while Kvothe spends spare hours searching for hints about the Amyr and the Chandrian. Elodin’s instruction in naming resumes, but remains deliberately confusing, leaving Kvothe feeling stalled and doubtful of progress.

Kvothe regularly crosses to Imre despite worsening weather, finding Denna at the Eolian more often. She is usually with a different suitor. Kvothe and each man maintain polite rivalry at her table, but Kvothe notes the men’s insecurity and his own quiet claim to a part of Denna that seems only his, though he has never been her lover.

Discussing Denna with Wilem and Simmon, Kvothe rejects their advice to court her openly. When Simmon calls Denna cruel, Kvothe agrees but clarifies she is not spiteful—only cruel in the sense of a wild thing acting by its nature. He vows not to chase her, likening pursuit to startling a hind. In the Questioning Hall courtyard, he releases Denna’s signed note to the wind, seeking an omen that never comes.

Meanwhile, Ambrose remains conspicuously quiet. Kvothe relaxes, wrongly believing the feud has cooled. As narrator, Kvothe reveals that Ambrose was merely waiting; his eventual revenge caught Kvothe unprepared and drove him from the University, though that account lies beyond this chapter.

  • Denna
Often at the Eolian with new suitors; warmly greets Kvothe. Described as cruel like a wild hind, untamable by pursuit.

Mentors Kvothe in the Archives’ workings; ally in his ongoing research.
  • Elodin
Master Namer whose bewildering lessons leave Kvothe uncertain of any progress.
