CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR Yet to Learn

Kvothe wakes exhausted and discovers a new passenger, Josn, who quickly monopolizes Denna’s attention with easy charm. Kvothe, jealous yet proud, keeps his distance and broods through the day, recalling the intimacy of the previous night’s conversation with Denna.

That evening Josn unveils a troupers lute and performs several songs competently, drawing the camp’s attention. Consumed by hunger to play after years without an instrument, Kvothe breaks etiquette and asks to hold the lute. Despite Josn’s reluctance, Kvothe tunes it instinctively and begins to play.

The music starts tentative, then surges as Kvothe pours his years of hardship into the performance. The camp sits transfixed. When Kvothe’s unpracticed hands finally slip, the spell breaks: Roent stirs, the mercenaries exchange looks, and Denna quietly weeps. Josn stands pale and stricken, his confidence shattered.

Unsure whether to thank or apologize, Kvothe returns the lute and walks away to sleep by the wagons. A brief narrative aside frames this as his last night before reaching the University, granting Kvothe a private moment and reminding us he is still a child who has yet to learn true sorrow.
