CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT Interlude—Looking

Overview

The Waystone’s quiet is shattered when a dazed mercenary—speaking strange tongues—arrives, becomes violently inhuman, and kills Shep before Aaron breaks it with iron. The town settles on a safer explanation, but Kvothe and Bast privately suspect a Fae creature, perhaps a skin dancer. Chronicler is touched and numbed; Kvothe’s sympathy fails, deepening the mystery.

After the body is taken and rumors cool, Kvothe confirms to Aaron it was a “demon,” and prepares to continue his story, hinting at crucial discoveries beneath the University.

Summary

On Felling night, the regulars crowd into the Waystone as Kvothe plays the unassuming innkeeper. To shield Chronicler’s presence, Kvothe and Bast improvise a will-writing ruse. Old Cob begins embellishing a Kvothe legend when heavy boots interrupt: a ragged mercenary enters, dazed, speaking odd, archaic phrases. Chronicler recognizes him as one of the men who robbed him and seizes the mercenary’s sword.

The mercenary suddenly becomes terrifyingly focused and inhumanly strong, snapping the blade with his bare hand and burning Chronicler’s shoulder by touch. Bast tackles him, but is hurled aside. Shep stabs the creature; it answers with two swift, mortal strikes. As panic erupts, the smith’s prentice retrieves his iron bar and relentlessly beats the mercenary, whose broken body still crawls until iron-blows finally still it; the corpse vomits tar-black fluid.

The inn fills with rumor and grief. Shep’s body is collected; the constable, out of his depth, accepts a story of a denner-mad deserter and schedules a trial for the prentice. When the crowd thins, the prentice—naming himself Aaron—privately deduces the truth from Kvothe’s attempted fire and the creature’s reaction to iron. Kvothe confirms: it was a “demon.”

Alone, Kvothe and Bast debate its nature. Bast suspects a Mahael-uret skin dancer but doubts due to its dullness and failure to flee to a new host. Chronicler’s shoulder remains numb from the touch. Bast treats him while warning Chronicler not to question Kvothe’s failed sympathy spark with the elderberry liquor. Weary, Kvothe accepts blame for wider troubles, then invites Chronicler to resume the narrative, promising revelations about what he found beneath the University.
