CHAPTER FORTY-SIX The Ever-Changing Wind

Overview

Kvothe finally corners Master Elodin, who leads him to the University asylum to show the perils of Arcanism and naming. Elodin demonstrates true naming by shattering stone in his former copper-lined cell. Testing Kvothe’s resolve, Elodin orders a rooftop leap; Kvothe jumps, is badly hurt, and Elodin refuses to teach him, pushing Kvothe toward artificing.

Summary

Seeking Master Elodin, Kvothe catches him leaving the University and asks to study naming. Elodin dismisses him, sets a trivial pinecone task, and evades questions, but finally offers three answers if Kvothe leaves afterward. Provoked by evasions, Kvothe persists, and Elodin decides to "show" him why.

Elodin leads Kvothe to Haven, the University’s asylum. Inside, staff cite a coming storm and full moon as reasons patients stay in. Elodin visits Alder Whin, an arcanist and his former giller, now terrified and fragile, and insists Whin must never be restrained. Leaving, Elodin rebukes Kvothe’s naiveté and opens another room where a patient screams, illustrating that advanced study—not mere academics—can break minds.

In a copper-doored suite Elodin calls his old room, the air feels unnaturally heavy. He flings a chair harmlessly at the window, then speaks a binding word that turns a stone wall to cascading sand, revealing copper-veined barriers. He steps onto the balcony, free where he was once confined for two years, underscoring both his power and the University’s precautions.

On the roof, Kvothe asks what it takes to study naming. Elodin says: “Jump.” Reading it as a test of faith and recalling Taborlin’s stories, Kvothe steps off. He falls hard, breaking ribs and dislocating a shoulder. Elodin, astonished, calls it the stupidest thing he has ever seen and refuses to teach someone so reckless.

After Elodin helps Kvothe to the Medica, Kvothe accepts that, for now, he will pursue artificing instead of naming, wary of Elodin’s perilous tutelage and sobered by the cost of his leap.
