Master Lorren escorts Kvothe to the bursar, where the irritable Riem reluctantly pays out three talents for Kvothe’s negative tuition. Kvothe asks Lorren to redeem and safeguard the book he sold to the Broken Binding, hoping to buy it back later; Lorren agrees to keep it safe in the Archives.

After class sign-ups, Kvothe attempts to enter the Archives. When Kvothe challenges the double standard, Ambrose threatens repercussions. Kvothe departs, angered but reassured that he can navigate University politics as he did the streets, and lets the slight kindle his resolve.
