CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO Leaves
Overview
Kvothe narrows his coursework and doubles down on artificing as his best path to solvency. In the Fishery, Kilvin demonstrates the perilous, flammable bone-tar, underscoring daily risks and potential profits. That night Kvothe reunites with Denna, steals time from Anker’s to walk with her, they flirt intimately, but he leaves without kissing, spiraling into doubt.
Summary
Kvothe limits himself to Advanced Sympathy, a Medica shift, and his apprenticeship under Manet, choosing artificing as his route to financial independence if he can outpace his debts and survive the Fishery’s hazards.
In a crowded workshop, Kilvin unveils a sealed canister of volatile bone-tar, demonstrating its properties by decanting a chilled vial into a firewell. The reagent forms a pooling vapor that ignites into sodium-red flames, then gutters out. Kilvin stresses its corrosive, flammable danger and the need to keep it cold and pressurized. Manet translates with gallows humor and notes its lucrative use in specialty lamp emitters. Kvothe notices Fela works in the Fishery for sculptural equipment.
That evening at Anker’s, Kvothe spots Denna. Flustered mid-song, he bargains with Anker for an early exit and leads the tavern in a self-sustaining rendition of Tinker Tanner to cover his absence.
Kvothe and Denna slip out and share a playful, intimate walk. He vaults up to his room to stow his lute, impressing her. They banter about Sovoy, and Denna invites him to "steal" her. Their talk turns to flowers as metaphors: Kvothe chooses the rare selas for Denna; she prefers daisies and calls him a willow, pliant yet rooted.
At the Oaken Oar door, Kvothe hesitates to kiss her, wary of presumption and Deoch’s caution. He leaves elated, then collapses into self-doubt, replaying the night and fearing he spoke too much or too little, regretting not being bolder.
