CHAPTER EIGHTY-SIX The Fire Itself

In Hollows, the Chancellor pronounces “six lashes and expulsion,” but a vote swiftly suspends the expulsion at Elodin’s objection. All Masters except Hemme raise hands, and the Chancellor immediately declares Kvothe a Re’lar with Elodin as sponsor. Ambrose sputters and flees after Hemme as the meeting adjourns.

Outside, Elodin sheds his robes and walks with Kvothe, explaining the Arcanum’s origins and ranks: E’lir (see-er) and Re’lar (speaker). He stresses that true power comes from speaking Names—the shapes of the world—contrasting the Arcanum’s potent past with its diluted present.

Elodin demonstrates the lesser power of ordinary names by summoning an errand boy, Nathan, then pivots to Kvothe’s wind-calling. He explains the waking versus sleeping mind: strong emotion from Ambrose breaking Kvothe’s lute roused Kvothe’s sleeping mind, which knew the Name of the wind; Elodin soothed it with another Name. He insists they must rouse that power slowly and teach control.

To normalize Kvothe’s outburst, Elodin shares his own first Naming—shouting during an argument with Elxa Dai, which exploded braziers—and promises that as a Re’lar, Kvothe can learn advanced bindings and more of Naming. However, Archives access remains Lorren’s domain; Elodin refuses Kvothe entry and only teases the secretive four-plate door, admitting merely that it exists.

As they continue, Kvothe presses for explanation. Elodin distinguishes words from Names: words hold power but are “a painting of a fire,” while “a name is the fire itself.” Using the color blue as an example, he shows the limits of description and ends in playful exultation, shouting “Blue!” to the sky, underscoring that Naming must be experienced, not explained.
