CHAPTER SEVEN Of Beginnings and the Names of Things

Morning light fills the Waystone Inn as Chronicler prepares to record. Kvothe asks how stories are usually taken down, rejects revision, and tests Chronicler’s claim of speed. Chronicler demonstrates his cipher; Kvothe rattles off phrases while watching the pen, then examines the symbols.

Chronicler explains his phonetic system. Kvothe rapidly infers its logic, identifies vowel and consonant patterns, and completes the chart himself without error. Chronicler, stunned, recalls rumors that Kvothe once learned Tenia in a day; Kvothe clarifies it was a day and a half without sleep.

Kvothe sets strict terms: as Edema Ruh, he demands that Chronicler change nothing and accept his nonlinear telling if needed. After a measured pause, Kvothe begins, exploring possible beginnings—her singing, the University, and, deeper, the Chandrian, marked by ice-blue eyes, blood, and burning hair—then chooses to start at the true beginning.

He frames creation through names, pivots to himself, and declares the importance of names. He lists the many names and titles he has borne—Maedre’s meanings, E’lir, Dulator, and famed epithets such as the Bloodless, the Arcane, and Kingkiller—asserting he earned them. He boasts legendary deeds and closes with, “You may have heard of me,” firmly establishing the scope and stakes of his story.
