CHAPTER FORTY-THREE The Flickering Way
Overview
Kvothe, groggy from nahlrout after his whipping, finally enters the Archives but is tricked by Ambrose into carrying a candle into the Stacks. Caught, Kvothe is summarily banned by Master Lorren. He discovers a mysterious four-plate door and learns Ambrose’s influence is dangerous, sharpening Kvothe’s resolve for retribution.
Summary
Freshly whipped and buoyed by nahlrout, Kvothe goes to the Archives eager to explore the Stacks unrecorded. He finds Ambrose pressuring Fela at the desk and intervenes with barbed critiques of Ambrose’s poetry, forcing Ambrose to release her. Ambrose denies Kvothe entry, citing the ledger, but Kvothe reveals his bandaged back as proof of Arcanum rank.
Feigning accommodation, Ambrose invents a “stack fee” and charges Kvothe a talent, then offers a candle instead of a hand lamp. Fogged by the drug’s crash, Kvothe accepts and enters the dark Stacks, lighting the candle with sympathy. He wanders in awe, discovers study rooms and stairwells, and stumbles upon a seamless four-plate stone door engraved “valaritas,” which he desperately wishes to open.
Two scrivs find Kvothe with the open flame, seize the candle, and escort him out. Ambrose acts shocked and blames Kvothe for sneaking in. Master Lorren arrives in fury, reprimands Ambrose for lax duty, then bans Kvothe from the Archives, rejecting intentions and blaming the action: “Your hand held the fire.” Kvothe, exhausted and in pain, can’t mount a defense.
In the Mess, Kvothe tells Simmon and Manet he’s banned. They reveal there is no stack fee and that hand lamps are signed out, not bought, proving Ambrose’s setup. They warn of Ambrose’s noble power, his moneyed allies, and past cruelties against students. Stung but resolute, Kvothe masks his ire with literature and privately commits to making Ambrose regret crossing him.
