CHAPTER NINETY Half-Built Houses

Overview

Kvothe and Auri map deeper reaches of the Underthing, where Kvothe discovers Billows and a hidden door into the Archives. He recruits Fela, trespasses inside, and begins searching for the Amyr and Chandrian. Fela reveals the Archives’ tangled, ever-changing catalog systems, raising the stakes for Kvothe’s research.

Summary

Kvothe spends several nights exploring the Underthing with Auri, learning her names for its regions and following a dust-and-leather wind through Billows. Frustrated by blocked passages, he finally crawls through a collapsing, confining tunnel, pushing past panic and pain from his stitches, and discovers what he’d sought: a route into the Archives.

Emerging, Kvothe slips into the Mews and wakes a near-naked Fela to ask a favor: meet a friend at the four-plate door the next evening. His urgency overrides temptation; he declines her implicit invitation and hurries away, focused on exploiting the new path.

The next day Fela arrives at Valaritas, where a hooded Kvothe reveals he has already trespassed into the Archives via the hidden door used for ventilation access. Fela, alarmed at the risk of expulsion, hides him in a reading hole, then agrees to help him navigate the stacks.

Kvothe asks for histories on the Amyr and any nonfictional accounts of the Chandrian. As they move through the shelves avoiding scrivs, Fela explains the Archives’ chronic disorder: competing catalog systems across centuries, burned ledgers, hidden caches, and “half-built houses” of organization. Kvothe realizes the sheer difficulty of finding answers, even with an illicit way in.
