CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE Enough Rope
Overview
Kvothe turns Master Hemme’s public taunt into a live sympathy demonstration, clearly explaining the three laws and using Hemme’s hair to create a link. By cleverly sourcing heat from a brazier, Kvothe makes Hemme feel the flame, wins the class’s applause, and forces a public, begrudging handshake.
The power dynamic shifts: Hemme’s attempt to humiliate Kvothe backfires, establishing Kvothe’s competence and boldness among students and faculty.
Summary
Kvothe arrives early to Hemme’s lecture intending to avoid another dull session. Hemme instead calls Kvothe out, announcing that Kvothe will give the day’s lecture, expecting him to fail. Refusing to be bullied, Kvothe accepts, takes the stage, and surveys the classroom tools.
Addressing the class, Kvothe succinctly outlines the three laws of sympathy: Correspondence, Consanguinity, and Conservation. He melts wax to form a crude doll and attaches a hair from Hemme, explaining how resemblance and consanguinity affect link strength. The class warms to his confident, clear instruction.
Kvothe first shows why a simple candle-to-foot link fails: Conservation limits the effect. He then binds two links at once—Hemme to the doll and the candle to the brazier—so the candle’s apparent heat draws real energy from the larger fire. When Kvothe holds the doll near the flame, Hemme reacts in pain, proving the point.
Kvothe heightens the stakes by suggesting what a stronger fire would do, prompting Hemme to rush the stage, seemingly favoring his leg. Kvothe ends with a performer’s cue that elicits applause, confronting Hemme with a public success and extending a hand to shake.
Pressed by the watching class, Hemme swallows his anger and shakes Kvothe’s hand. When Kvothe subtly gestures with the doll over the brazier, Hemme pales and loosens his grip. Kvothe departs to sustained approval, having reversed the humiliation and established his mastery.
