CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR Nine in the Fire

Kvothe visits Imre to find Denna and learns from the Oaken Oar that a dark‑haired lodger, “Dinnah,” matches her and has just left overnight without paying. Repeated trips yield nothing; Deoch advises that searching is futile, but Kvothe persists, growing torn between worry and irritation.

Back at the Fishery, Master Kilvin evaluates Kvothe’s first solo project: a sympathy hand-lamp. Kilvin insists on caution, then tests it, noting the graded switch but criticizing the tight, bull’s-eye focus as suited to burglars and spies. He confronts Kvothe’s motive to impress, acknowledges his superior skill, yet questions his judgment and initially says the lamp must be melted to protect the University’s reputation.

Relieved to have passed into greater autonomy despite losing the sale, Kvothe tells Manet. Manet cautions against risky emitter work and points out the many dangers in the Fishery, urging patience about Kvothe’s Archives ban. He refuses to reveal any covert method in, warning that being caught would mean permanent expulsion.

Pressed by looming finances, Kvothe rejects patience. Returning to Kilvin, he asks to buy the lamp; Kilvin instead grants it to him on condition he never sell or lend it, to prevent misuse. As Kvothe leaves, he realizes from Manet’s slip that a hidden Archives entrance exists and resolves to find it himself.
