Overview
Kvothe pauses his tale to confront the regret that haunts him: failing to aid a crying boy. Pressed by Bast, he explains why he remained in Tarbean—distance, destitution, winter, shock, and a punishing inertia. He acknowledges irrational self-blame and says he needed someone to wake him, foreshadowing Skarpi.
Summary
Kvothe halts the narrative and reflects on memory and pain, admitting that while beatings blur, he vividly remembers the boy he did not help. He insists bones mend but regret endures, identifying this failure as a formative wound shaping who he became.
When Bast asks why he stayed in Tarbean, Kvothe explains the practical barriers: everyone he knew was dead, Abenthy was hundreds of miles away, and he had no maps, money, shoes, or help. He believes a winter journey would have killed him, whereas begging and stealing in Tarbean kept him alive.
