CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT The Ever-Changing Wind
Overview
Kvothe reels from poverty and injuries after the Fishery fire, briefly buoyed by earnings from his emitters yet still precarious. Fela thanks him with a fine cloak, which Denna misinterprets and leaves. Alarmed by bone-tar in the drains, Kvothe recruits Mola to find Auri safe below, deepening trust and preserving Auri’s secrecy.
Summary
Kvothe spends the day in pain and near destitution, resentful of his lack of a safety net compared to friends like Simmon and Wilem. Though Kilvin sells half of Kvothe’s emitters for a good price, the money only covers boots and meager needs, and Kvothe broods over how precarious his position remains. He skips Advanced Sympathy and heads to Imre hoping to see Denna.
At the Eolian, Deoch points him to a waiting visitor—Fela. She thanks Kvothe for rescuing her from the Fishery fire, confiding her terror and embarrassment at having frozen. Kvothe reassures her, praising her strength. Fela gifts him a fine green cloak with many pockets, fitting it on him just as Denna passes and leaves, apparently drawing the wrong conclusion. Kvothe restrains the impulse to chase Denna and remains with Fela.
Over drinks, Fela mentions unusual months-long work with Elodin. After she departs, Kvothe returns to the University at dusk. Remembering Kilvin’s remark about bone-tar going into the drains, Kvothe panics for Auri, who lives in the Underthing. He convinces Mola to come with her Medica kit and leads her over rooftops to Auri’s hidden place.
Auri appears unharmed, gifts Kvothe a curious coin, and delights in sea salt he brings. She confirms the Underthing stinks of bone-tar but avoided injury. Kvothe introduces Mola gently; Auri accepts her, shares an apple, and asks for music. Kvothe plays for them under the stars. On the way back, Mola urges telling authorities; Kvothe refuses, fearing Auri would flee or be confined. Mola agrees, for now, to help privately with clothing and support while Kvothe keeps Auri’s secret.
