He spends evenings in Kilvin’s workshop doing basic tasks for steady pay, observing Kilvin’s meticulous accounting of labor.

Outside formal study, Kvothe learns dogsbreath from Arcanum bunkmates, then exploits psychology and dexterity to win money until they stop inviting him. He grows closest to Wilem and Simmon, while his swift rise to E’lir and prior defiance of a master isolate him from many students.

Recognizing the attention from his dramatic entrance, Kvothe decides to cultivate a useful reputation. He lets real details slip—admission without a letter, masters paying him three talents, surviving Tarbean—and seeds outrageous lies through Basil, his former bunkmate, to stoke rumor: demon blood, night vision, sleeplessness, and moon-muttered languages.

Meanwhile, his feud with Ambrose becomes a public spectacle. Ambrose provokes with loud insults or backhanded compliments; Kvothe, armed with stage-honed wit, consistently outmaneuvers him verbally. Each exchange leaves Ambrose humiliated and both men more hostile, feeding Kvothe’s growing reputation for boldness.

Kvothe clarifies that his confrontations are fearlessness, not bravery, born from real fear learned in Tarbean. He views Ambrose as a harmless buffoon, a grave misjudgment he underscores with, “I was a fool,” foreshadowing that his underestimation will have serious consequences.
