At the greystone hill, Kvothe finds Denna gone and leaves food, water, a blanket, and a note, then returns to Trebon at dusk. Surveying the damage, he realizes the rooftop cistern’s water dropped below his makeshift sygaldry, allowing the fires to flare again, though his efforts likely saved much of the town.

The mayor and constable question Kvothe, but his silence and presence let rumors cast him as the mysterious figure on the church roof. The town believes the draccus was a demon slain by Tehlu’s iron wheel. At last Nina (Verainia Greyflock) visits privately, revealing that Mauthen unearthed a large, ornate vase painted with scenes matching the Chandrian and their signs. This confirms Kvothe’s suspicions about the massacre’s cause. Seeing Nina’s terror, Kvothe soothes her, gifting a metal disk as a supposed anti-demon charm and “tuning” it with a resonant recitation.

As Nina departs reassured, Kvothe reflects that, despite his recent feats, comforting her is the first moment he truly feels like a hero, marking a subtle turning point in his identity.
