CHAPTER SEVENTY Signs
Overview
Kvothe awakens after the attack, steadies himself, and overhears news of a blue-flame wedding massacre near Trebon, recognizing a Chandrian sign. He resolves to go immediately and secures provisions. With Devi, he gets his wound stitched, seeds protective rumors, and negotiates a high-stakes loan, leveraging potential Archives access.
Summary
Kvothe wakes in a cheap dockside inn, sore and cautious after the previous night’s ambush. He washes, eats, and forces himself to think clearly, resisting the Tarbean-honed urge to flee the University and its entanglements. While mending his cloak, he overhears two river men describing a wedding party slaughtered by blue fire near Trebon.
The details—blue flame, mass death, and oddities—convince Kvothe the Chandrian were there less than a day ago. Realizing the rarity of such a lead, he decides he must reach Trebon immediately, before memories fade and evidence is disturbed. He questions the inn about distances, buys road food and water, and calculates he’ll need a very fast horse to cover roughly seventy miles the same day.
Kvothe goes to Devi. She relays street gossip that a red-haired student blasted two assailants, which Kvothe confirms were the men who tracked him with a dowsing compass and his hair. Devi cleans and stitches his side, and—after debating whether the attack was a warning or an attempted murder—agrees to spread rumors naming Kvothe and warning off future hires, hoping to deter further attempts.
Kvothe asks Devi for twenty talents to buy a swift horse. He offers his lute, Rhetoric and Logic, and his silver talent pipes as collateral but refuses to surrender his handheld lamp due to a promise to Kilvin. When interest makes the sum untenable, he adds a bold term: future access to the Archives via an alternate way in he intends to find. Tempted, Devi offers twelve talents; Kvothe holds firm at twenty, ending the scene with the terms unresolved.
