CHAPTER SIX The Price of Remembering

Late the next day, Chronicler descends to the Waystone’s common room, unsteady but alert. Kote probes his story and identity until Chronicler admits he is Devan Lochees, the Chronicler, whose debunking work Kote has read. Their banter establishes mutual recognition and tension over truth versus legend.

When Chronicler hints at a price on Kvothe’s head and rumors, Kote turns cold, warning that Chronicler’s presence endangers him. Chronicler insists he was careful and presses that the world believes Kvothe dead or mythical. Kote deflects, claiming death and myth keep enemies away, yet acknowledges being both killer and hero.

Chronicler pushes harder, contrasting “Kvothe the Arcane” with “Kvothe Kingkiller,” and mentions talk of a red-haired terror, even a new Chandrian. He starts to mention a woman, triggering Kote’s grief and anger; a bottle of strawberry wine shatters, implying dangerous power barely contained. Kote demands what anyone could know of her or of him, and Chronicler answers: only what they’re told.

Kote resumes methodical cleaning, then tests Chronicler’s schedule. Chronicler aims to meet an earl in Treya but offers a hurried interview. Kote refuses a rushed tale, insisting, “A real story takes time,” and sets his price: three full days.

Chronicler protests deadlines and cites past interviews, but Kote remains firm, even implying Chronicler may not be free to leave with what he knows. Weighing the threat and opportunity, Chronicler accepts. In that concession, the innkeeper’s mask slips; confidence and purpose return as Kote acknowledges, at last, “Yes, I suppose I am,” revealing Kvothe beneath.
