CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO A Time for Demons

Kvothe recounts early lessons in Tarbean: where to scavenge, how to hide, and the city’s immensity split between poor Waterside and wealthy Hillside. With Midwinter approaching and demon masks sold widely, he notes the festival’s hazards and decides to try begging Hillside on the safer final day.

Among polite crowds, Kvothe witnesses play-acted demons harassing a couple and fleeing at Tehlu’s name. Encouraged, he begs a well-dressed woman who gives him a silver penny—enough for weeks of food and warmth. A shopkeeper alerts a Hillside guard, who pursues Kvothe through unfamiliar alleys, catches him, and savagely beats him, warning him never to return. Kvothe drops the silver and, after the guard leaves, fails to find it in the dark and snow.

Injured and numb, Kvothe limps toward Waterside and collapses in the street, drifting toward sleep and death. Two masked participants—Encanis-masked Gerrek and a green-masked Holly—find him. Despite the approaching pageant, Gerrek rouses Kvothe, recognizes his injuries, and presses a silver talent and gloves on him before fleeing the oncoming procession.

The Tehlin pageantry passes in torchlit spectacle while Kvothe hides in a doorway. Strengthened by the gift, he hobbles to the Laughing Man inn’s back door, pays the kitchen girls for food and a blanket, but refuses their offer of a place by the fire, recoiling from contact.

Kvothe reaches his rooftop refuge, warms himself by a chimney, and eats bread, turkey, and spiced wine. As bells ring midnight and the city celebrates the new year, he endures alone, tempered by charity yet shaped by hardship and distrust.
