CHAPTER EIGHTY-ONE Pride
Overview
Kvothe briefly celebrates killing the draccus and saving Trebon, only for the damaged church to collapse beneath him. His attempted escape through a nearby oak fails, and he is knocked unconscious. Summary
Kvothe looks down to see the draccus pinned motionless beneath the church’s great iron wheel. Relieved and regretful for the creature, Kvothe savors the cool air and the sense of having saved Trebon. He puts away his tools, feeling smug in the quiet aftermath.
Without warning, a grinding sound announces structural failure. The church roof buckles and collapses under Kvothe, sending rubble cascading. Seeing no safe adjacent roof, Kvothe scrambles backward as the front of the building gives way.
In desperation, Kvothe leaps for the charred oak beside the church. The branch snaps under his weight, he crashes through the limbs, strikes his head, and everything goes dark. His victory over the draccus is immediately undercut by the collapse, leaving his fate uncertain.
