CHAPTER THIRTEEN Interlude—Flesh with Blood Beneath

Silence falls as Kvothe pauses his tale. He rises to fetch drinks, calls for Bast, and banters with him, revealing Bast has been eavesdropping. Chronicler studies Bast with growing suspicion, noticing unsettling differences others would miss.

Acting on his realization, Chronicler places an iron token on the table and names it, binding Bast. Bast reacts with feral fury and moves to attack, but Kvothe stops him mid-lunge with a single-grip restraint and a command, then orders Chronicler to release the binding.

With the iron’s power lifted, Bast’s glamour slips: his eyes are uniformly blue and his boots become cloven hooves. Kvothe scolds both men, then properly introduces them—naming Chronicler as Arcanum, likely Re’lar, who knows iron’s name, and Bast as a Telwyth Mael prince and Kvothe’s student. He labels their actions understandable but foolish, insisting on peace.

When they hesitate, Kvothe’s demeanor hardens; his presence turns fierce enough to cow both. Bast and Chronicler exchange a tentative handshake. Kvothe pointedly reminds them they are “five fingers and flesh with blood beneath,” then diffuses the moment by pouring drinks and bringing food.

As the tension eases, Kvothe resumes the role of innkeeper but confirms authority by setting terms: they will talk civilly while he prepares supper. Afterward, Kvothe asks how much Bast overheard, decides not to repeat himself, and announces the tale’s next phase will turn downward and darker, signaling a grim shift ahead.
