CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN A Matter of Hands
Overview
Kvothe returns to the damaged Fishery, completes his emitters, and meets a bandaged but grateful Kilvin. Kilvin explains the canister’s failure and how he contained the blaze by channeling heat into a heat-eater. Kvothe admits using blood to unbind the drench. Kilvin hints at true naming, crediting Elodin with fire’s name.
Summary
After lunch at Anker’s, Kvothe returns to the Fishery to assess the fire damage and retrieve his cloak. He finds most of the shop intact but the northeast quarter destroyed and eerily deserted. Working through injury and a bandaged thumb, he spends hours completing his blue emitters.
Kilvin arrives with bandaged hands and, after a mock scolding about Kvothe’s lamp and bare feet, thanks Kvothe for saving Fela. Kilvin returns the charred cloak, the intact hand-lamp, and a sack of Kvothe’s belongings. He quotes a Siaru proverb about periodic disaster and notes his burns are painful but not crippling.
Discussing the accident, Kilvin explains the canister’s sygaldry failed, overchilled the inner glass, and cracked it, letting the reagent eat through the shell. When pressed on the firefight, Kilvin denies naming the fire and asks how Kvothe survived the flames so quickly. Kvothe admits he shattered the twice-tough drench by unbinding its sygaldry using his own blood as a heat source, a calculated risk that impressed but concerned Kilvin.
Kilvin reveals Elodin knows the name of fire and that naming can command it, grounding legends in reality. As for suppression, Kilvin used a vial of reagent as a sympathetic link to draw heat from the spill into a prepared heat-eater, while others contained the remainder with lime and sand—an effort he estimates at roughly 850 million thaums, done quickly but not easily.
