On the rooftops of Tarbean, Kvothe collapses into grief until exhaustion leaves him awake and empty. Unable to sleep, he thinks of his parents and finds the memories less bitter. He chooses to use Abenthy’s mental exercises, slowly stretching his long-neglected mind back into focus.

As his clarity returns, Kvothe rediscovers forgotten parts of himself: lessons in diction, calming teas, lute fingerings, and his identity as a musician. Remembering the Chandrian’s massacre of his troupe, he feels a deep, controlled anger but acknowledges that direct revenge is currently impossible.

Reflecting on Haliax’s words to Cinder, Kvothe realizes the Chandrian have enemies—the Amyr, the singers, and the Sithe. He questions why common tales persist if the Chandrian kill singers, and why his parents’ song provoked them. He doubts the official history that the Amyr ended with the Aturan Empire and notes that Skarpi’s tale traces them back to Selitos, implying hidden truths.

Determined to find answers, Kvothe inventories his meager possessions and recognizes his poverty. He knows he must seek knowledge where it can be found.

At dawn, Kvothe retrieves his most precious relic, Abenthy’s Rhetoric and Logic, preserved under a rafter. He reads Ben’s inscription urging him to defend himself at the University and to remember his father’s song, finding in it both a connection to his past and a compass for what to pursue next.
