CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE Wind or Women’s Fancy

Over two span, Kvothe repeatedly crosses to Imre on errands but truly to look for Denna. At the Eolian, Deoch confirms no one has seen her and invites Kvothe to share wine. Their talk paints Denna as unchanged yet hard to define: lovely, restless, and often resented by women. Deoch explains her disappearances as survival, given her lack of family, means, or protection, and defends her for taking opportunities and gifts without becoming beholden.

Loosened by wine, Kvothe leaves for the University and is ambushed in a dark alley by two professionals guided by a “finder.” Realizing this is no simple robbery, he shatters a bottle of brand to create light and distraction, then throws bassal shavings and pulls heat with sympathy, igniting a blinding white flare. One attacker is flash-blinded; the other knocks himself out fleeing. Kvothe threatens them in a Taborlin-like voice, learns they work from a hair and half coin without names, but flees before securing the finder.

Bruised and bleeding, Kvothe escapes and later regrets not taking the device. He slips back to Anker’s by window, discovers a wedged note from Denna inviting him to meet weeks earlier, and patches his shallow cut. Fearing the killers can now dowse his blood from their knife, he leaves again to avoid being traced.

Kvothe climbs above a courtyard where wind eddies unpredictably and attaches his hairs to leaves, scattering dozens of false signals. Master Elodin appears quietly, calling the place the old “House of the Wind,” and muses on its history while Kvothe, half-dazed, withdraws.

Determined to mislead any blood-based dowsing, Kvothe seals his bloody shirt in a wine jar and drops it into the Omethi to pull pursuit southward. He resolves not to involve the masters or Medica, avoiding expulsion risk and signaling to Ambrose’s agents that he was not truly hurt.
