CHAPTER SEVENTY-NINE Sweet Talk

Overview

Kvothe and Denna return to the greystone hill, prepare an enormous denner-resin poison, and build a larger fire and a ladder to lure and escape the draccus. As Denna’s mania subsides, intimate conversation reveals her fragile health and traumatic reliance on Ash, deepening Kvothe’s resolve to protect her while they await the beast.

Summary

Kvothe and Denna trek back to the greystone hill, slowed by Denna’s denner-fueled mania. At the stream, Denna bathes and flirts, but Kvothe keeps his distance, determined not to exploit her condition. At the hilltop, he sets Denna to gather wood while he enlarges the fire pit to draw the draccus sooner.

Kvothe opens the denner resin and begins estimating a lethal dose for a five-ton draccus, scaling from Denna’s earlier intake. He forms pellets, then apricot-sized balls, repeatedly increasing the total after Denna suggests the creature may have tolerance or different physiology. They ultimately double and redouble the quantity, sacrificing much of the valuable resin for certainty, while also preparing a rough ladder up the greystone for safety.

As rain starts, they light a larger blaze and eat a meager dinner. Kvothe tells Denna about the Fishery fire to explain his missed meeting. Her mania fades to lethargy, and Kvothe checks her pulse and breathing, noting slight crackling but no alarming signs. Denna, drifting in and out of delirium, shares childhood pneumonia, lifelong breathing trouble, and existential musings, while Kvothe burns resin to scent-lure the draccus from the bluffs.

Night falls and cold sets in. Denna, shivering, invites closeness; Kvothe holds her as they watch for the draccus. Their intimacy deepens without impropriety. Denna alternates between dreamy candor and clarity, urging Kvothe to “push more, just a little,” then nestles beside him under a blanket.

Half-asleep, Denna reveals that Ash survived the farm fire and deliberately struck her at her own pleading to make her survival believable to authorities. Kvothe is sickened and condemns Ash as unworthy; Denna counters that hunger leaves her few choices. As she drifts off, she asks Kvothe to be her protector; he quietly promises while she finally sleeps, the fire still blazing as they await the draccus.
