When rain leaves the roads muddy, the troupe pauses, and Abenthy turns the downtime into a lesson. Noting Kvothe’s impatience, Abenthy reframes the day as foundational practice, using iron drabs to introduce the law of sympathy and the Binding of Parallel Motion.

Abenthy demonstrates by pitching two drabs together, invoking words, and moving one to make the other mimic. He explains that stronger similarity yields a stronger link. Kvothe practices the binding, holding his Alar with Heart of Stone, and discovers the magic works without spectacle.

Kvothe experiments broadly, learning that energy cannot be created; effort rises with dissimilarity due to leakage in weak links. He tests various pairings, finding best results with closely matched items, and quickly infers that pine pitch is only a focusing aid.

Over time, Abenthy teaches many additional bindings and basic academics, advancing only as Kvothe proves mastery. Kvothe’s curiosity speeds his progress but also courts trouble.

One evening, Kvothe’s mother overhears him reciting a crude Lady Lackless rhyme. She gently rebukes him, distinguishing rude address from harmful gossip and reminding him that Lady Lackless is a real person. Chastened, Kvothe makes amends and continues helping the troupe—acting, crafting, tending horses—while studying through a contented year.
