CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX The Mating Habits of the Common Draccus
Overview
Kvothe and Denna discover the terrifying silhouette is a draccus, not a dragon. Kvothe explains its herbivorous nature and fire as a mating display while the beast smothers and eats their burning logs. They take refuge atop standing stones, share cloak and caution, and settle into uneasy rest, foreshadowing coming trouble.
Summary
Denna panics at the sight of a “dragon,” but Kvothe insists it is a draccus. Their tension breaks into nervous laughter as the creature approaches their camp, breathing blue fire.
Kvothe explains from University reading that draccus are herbivores and use fire in mating displays. The draccus rolls in their campfire, scattering embers, then systematically smothers burning logs and bolts them down whole.
As they watch, Denna reasons that a fire-quelling instinct would be necessary for a forest-dwelling beast, and Kvothe adds that draccus are rare, ancient, and often killed by misunderstanding. The draccus eventually settles on the bed of coals like a nesting hen.
Cold and exhausted, Denna refuses to descend for their blanket, so Kvothe gives her his cloak and keeps watch while she sleeps atop the stones. He feels content yet oblivious, closing the scene with a foreshadowing of “unexpected tragedies” to come the next day.
