CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE Spark
Overview
Kvothe celebrates becoming a journeyman artificer and seeks a way back into the Archives, but Wilem refuses to risk his position. Denna unexpectedly arrives, and she and Kvothe spend a long, intimate night talking and arrange to meet again. Deoch warns Kvothe that Denna will break his heart, which Kvothe dismisses.
Summary
Kvothe lures Wilem and Simmon to the Eolian on the strength of free drinks and reveals he has been approved as a journeyman artificer for his sympathy lamp. They toast his success and curse Ambrose. Kvothe jokingly probes Wilem about sneaking him into the Archives, but Wilem refuses, citing the seriousness of Kvothe’s ban and the risk of expulsion.
Denna arrives on Deoch’s arm, stunningly dressed. Recognizing Kvothe, she lights up and joins the table. With Wilem and Simmon’s teasing encouragement, Denna invites Kvothe away. They buy bread and strawberry wine and slip into a quiet garden.
Under a willow, they share an intimate, playful conversation, recalling their first meeting, her changing names, and her difficult time in Anilin. Denna asks to meet again—noon tomorrow at the Eolian—while both skirt direct confessions, speaking in careful, flirtatious circles.
Returning to the Eolian later, Kvothe hears from Deoch that his friends left earlier. Deoch carefully warns that Denna is dazzling but unholdable, likely to break Kvothe’s heart. Buoyed by the evening and the promise of tomorrow, Kvothe answers with poetic bravado, undeterred by the warning.
