CHAPTER FIFTEEN Distractions and Farewells

The troupe pauses in Hallowfell for wagon repairs, where Abenthy receives an irresistible offer from a young, capable widow who needs a tutor and help with her brewery. Recognizing both her need and their mutual attraction, Abenthy decides to stay, ending his time with the Edema Ruh.

Plans shift so the troupe can celebrate both Ben’s departure and Kvothe’s twelfth birthday. The night becomes a showcase of their best and worst: gifts for Kvothe, comic duels, near-disastrous fire-breathing, and heartfelt music. Kvothe’s parents perform the demanding Lay of Sir Savien, moving everyone to tears, and the revel carries a bittersweet tone.

Pressed by the troupe, Arliden briefly performs a tantalizing opening of his developing song about Lanre before stopping, reaffirming his rule not to unveil unfinished work. He and Laurian share a quiet dance that imprints Kvothe’s idea of love, while Ben and Laurian’s dignified dance deepens Kvothe’s ache at the impending separation.

At dawn, farewells are exchanged. Ben cautions Kvothe to avoid reckless experimentation and departs. Later, Kvothe discovers Ben’s gift: Rhetoric and Logic with an inscription urging him to defend himself at the University and remember Arliden’s song. Kvothe, daunted by leaving his family and life on the road, nevertheless promises to try, holding both fear and aspiration.
