CHAPTER TEN Alar and Several Stones
Overview
Ben drills Kvothe in Alar, forcing him to believe mutually contradictory outcomes about a falling stone, establishing the cornerstone of sympathy. Kvothe learns to split his mind, gaining efficiency at the cost of strain. Ben also introduces Heart of Stone and Seek the Stone, deepening Kvothe’s mental discipline and hinting at arcanists’ eccentricity.
Summary
Ben tests Kvothe with a fieldstone, demanding absolute belief that it will float upward when dropped. He frames this as Alar—unyielding, riding-crop certainty—and forbids self-deception. Despite repeated failures and a growing headache, Kvothe practices clearing his mind and forcing belief against evidence.
After hours, Kvothe maintains belief the rock will not fall even as Ben drops it. Ben escalates the exercise: Kvothe must simultaneously believe the stone will fall and will not fall. Kvothe succeeds by holding separate, contradictory convictions at once, pushing his mental limits to nosebleed and exhaustion but ending satisfied.
Discovering he can sustain multiple, distinct lines of thought, Kvothe turns it into a game, expanding from two to three mental threads, likening it to singing harmony with himself. This new capacity becomes a foundation for more complex arcanist work.
Ben then teaches Heart of Stone, a discipline for setting aside emotion to think with clarity. He also introduces Seek the Stone, a game where one part of the mind hides an imaginary object while another searches, strengthening Alar and multi-threaded thinking.
Kvothe experiences the unsettling side effects of divided consciousness—confusing himself, jeering at himself, and recognizing how such practices can breed eccentricity. The lessons establish sympathy as demanding iron will and mental control, not mere cleverness.
